Finn had seen Abigail serve as governess before, at the duke’s house party, so he wasn’t surprised how easily she explained things. Perhaps, with a little help from her, they all might find good positions with purpose.

As it was, strolling through the trees and shrubbery in the front garden felt wrong, as if he were neglecting his duty. Fortune seemed to agree. She kept rubbing her collar along the shrubbery, as if hoping to tear it off.

“Excuse me,” he told Abigail, and he set off around the pond, gaze veering from the shrubs to the trees to the distance. Yet he spotted nothing unexpected. The clouds were gathering and the wind rising, promising rain.

As he came around closer again, Abigail put herself in his path. The blue pelisse hugged her curves, as if the sky had come down to embrace her, and the wind had put a bloom in her cheeks.

“Still concerned about unwelcome visitors?” she asked.

“Yes,” he allowed. “We were surprised before, and in this spot.” He glanced up into the oak, but no one looked back this time.

“You cannot help yourself, can you?” she said with a smile. “You simply have to protect. It’s as if the urge is in your blood. Or is it the way you were trained?”

“We were all trained to protect the king, his sons, and the other members of his court,” he admitted. “Yet duty is more than a shirt I put on in the morning. It isn’t easy to take off. And it is what I do. Would you ask Wordsworth to lay down his pen?”

Abigail laughed, and the joy of the sound made his own lips rise. “I did think you a poet with the sword, sir. But even a poet must sleep and eat and enjoy the company of friends.”

“I can do all that when we know you and Lady Belfort are safe,” he told her. “I couldn’t protect my family. I will protect those I love now.”

She stared at him.

Why had those words come out? He knew better than to let his attention wander, even in conversation. Now, there was no denying the implication. His feelings were building, for all he had tried to prevent them. Best to retreat and regroup while he could.

“I must check the drive,” he muttered and strode off faster than if the French cavalry had been nipping at his heels.
